Ray Balbes is a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at UM-St. Louis.  He started out by dabbling in acrylics but with the advent of personal computers found that his interest in art could better be expressed via electronic art.  With his background in designing software tools for artists Balbes began to experiment with Mathematical and computer algorithms for creating fractal images.  This image combines true three-dimensional rendering methods and fractal algorithms; others utilize sophisticated interpolation (blending) techniques to produce subtle colors and shading.
